Burke Lake Park

Position: Manager on Duty (MOD)
Location: Burke Lake Park
Hours: Part time/30 hours per week average summer 20 hours per week Fall/Spring. Will include mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Expected to work weekends and holidays.
Salary: $12.66 to $18.47 per hour

Job Description: The Manager on Duty ensures the safe and effective operation of Burke Lake Park. Opens and closes the park for daily operations. Is responsible for training park staff and informing park patrons on Park Authority Rules and Regulations, state and county laws, and other important information as well as performing routine park checks. Responsible for cash handling activities and reconciliation. Supervises and serves as primary contact point for park visitors, patrons, and facility staff. Acts as lead first responder on behalf of the Park Authority in potential and actual emergency situations occurring on site while on duty.  Must be able to repeatedly lift 50 lbs. or more. May work other park facilities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications: Management experience. Ability to work alone in a park, work with others in a team setting, have effective communicative skills, and make decisions that may affect park operations. CPR, Boat U.S. and Basic Water Safety training recommended but will be provided upon employment.

Frying Pan Farm Park

Title: Store Operation Staff  
Salary: $15.90 to 17.00 per hour

Position Title: Maintenance Worker
Salary: $14-17/hour 
Location: Frying Pan Farm Park, Herndon, VA 
Schedule: 20+ hours per week; days vary and include weekdays, weekends and holidays

Description: Frying Pan Farm Park is a diverse 135 acre park and this position will include working indoors and outdoors. Duties include grounds maintenance to include mowing and landscaping, cleaning classrooms, Visitor Center and restrooms, trash removal, unlocking and locking building for user groups, patrolling park grounds, responding to staff and visitor requests, and helping with special events.

Qualifications:  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Be able to work outdoors in all weather, traverse uneven ground, lift up to 50 pounds and perform general maintenance and custodial work.

Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check. First Aid and CPR/AED certification (offered through Fairfax County) must be completed with 60 days of hire.

Green Spring Gardens

Position: Adult Education Program Coordinator
Location: Green Spring Gardens, 4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria, Virginia
Hours: 25-30 hours per week

Duties Include: Assist with all aspects of Adult Nature & Horticulture programming at Green Spring Gardens. Plan and conduct plant-based nature programs for adults and families. Contract guest speakers and manage purchase order payments for lecturers. Plan and coordinate bus day trip tours to area gardens. Schedule teaching staff and volunteers. Position: Historic House Assistant

Overview: The Historic House at Green Spring Gardens has an opening beginning immediately for a part-time assistant to work in all aspects of daily operations and tea programs.

Duties Include: Assist with all aspects of daily operations and tea programs at the 1784 Historic House. Opening and closing house to the public; greeting visitors and providing general and historical information about the site; gift shop and art show sales; handling cash register; providing general administrative support; answering telephone; taking program reservations; setting up for teas; assisting volunteers with tea service and clean-up; and assisting with light housekeeping tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience in customer service and administrative support; excellent communications skills; ability to climb stairs and to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.; basic computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.  A successful candidate must acquire a working knowledge of the history of the Historic House and Green Spring Gardens.

Natural Resource Branch

Position Title: Ecologist II 
Location: Natural Resource Branch, 12055 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax, VA. 22035
Hours: Part-time work with a flexible schedule during the work week but may require occasional evenings and weekends.
Salary: Starting at 34.88 per hour. 

The Fairfax County Park Authority is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to assist with invasive plant management, habitat restoration and education & outreach. This position will join the Natural Resource Management and Protection (NRMP) Branch of the Fairfax County Park Authority. Our staff is responsible for the management, protection, and stewardship of natural resources on approximately 24,000 acres of parkland in Fairfax County, VA. This is a limited-term exempt position that will be scheduled to work 1560 hours per year. 

The Fairfax County Park Authority currently has limited in-house abilities to remove invasive plants and perform habitat restoration. The Ecological Technician will supplement herbicide spray work done by a professional contractor, contractor quality control, as well as monitor restoration projects and record spatial data. Education and outreach as well as volunteer management will be a component of the position. Applicants should be mature, self-motivated, highly organized, and comfortable working alone in the field, as well as with groups.

Responsibilities of the Volunteer Coordinator include: 

  • Serves as IMA Program Volunteer Coordinator
  • Control invasive plants using manual control techniques and/or herbicides
  • Collect and manage spatial data using handheld devices/GPS units/desktop computers
  • Monitor current and future restoration projects
  • Maintain care of restoration plantings, which may include watering
  • Perform non-native invasive plant species assessments on parkland
  • Identify native and non-native plants
  • Participate in volunteer invasive plant removal events
  • Organize, deliver, and procure tools and supplies
  • Update and distribute outreach materials (print & digital)
  • Outreach to staff and citizens on invasive species issues
  • Development of written and oral reports
  • Analyzes program data to plan future priorities and projects
  • Serve as team lead for seasonal employee(s) and/or volunteers
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in natural resource management. Advanced knowledge of invasive plant identification. Education in natural resource management or environmental sciences.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Pesticide Applicators License or Registered Technician Certification or to be completed within first six months in position.

Riverbend Park

Position: Forest Preschool Co-Teacher
Location: Riverbend Park in Great Falls, Va. Located on the Potomac River with over 400 acres of forest, meadow and ponds. 8814 Jeffrey Rd, Great Falls, VA 
Hours: Mid-August to May: Monday-Fridays 8:30 am – 3:00 pm, June-Mid-August 10-35 hours per week. Some weekend and holiday work required.
Salary: $17.75-22.00/hour Limited Benefits eligible*, Position will not exceed 1560 hours/year

Overview: Riverbend Park Forest Preschool is a unique primarily outdoor preschool setting operating in 400 acres of protected park land. Several different teaching approaches are used to provide children with a fully emergent and immersive nature-based learning experience. Teaching approaches are influenced by Montessori, Reggio Emilia and Waldorf. Teachers and students spend 80%- 100% of each day outdoors in all-weather exploring and learning about nature in a park with forest, meadow and ponds along the Potomac River. Play your part by educating pre-schoolers to appreciate nature and learn valuable social emotional development skills.

Duties Include

  • Plan, design, and implement nature-based curriculum for preschool aged children 3 - 5 years in a nature-based setting in varying weather. 
  • Ensure the safety of children through supervision, implementing risk assessment and risk management procedures in a park.
  • Effective communication both orally and in writing which includes plans, calendars, emails, and phone calls with parents/guardians and park staff.
  • Routine cleaning and disinfecting of education spaces and materials.
  • Assist with managing and monitoring program budget.
  • Assist with management of student paperwork, ensuring it is up-to-date and filed appropriately, assist with re-licensing guidelines.
  • Obtain state mandated training hours (yearly) as outline in the Virginia Department of Licensing Hand-book.
  • Responsible for complying with and adhering to licensing standards and regulations as outlined by the Virginia Department of Social Services.
  • Other duties as assigned including but not limited to, assisting with annual park events, pro-grams, and summer camps.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a degree in natural, life, or physical sciences, natural history, education or closely related field and 1 years’ experience program planning, leading and supervising multiple preschool aged children 3-5 years old in an outdoor setting.

Certifications and Hiring Conditions:

  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified or able to obtain certification within 2 weeks of employment.
  • Medication Administration Training (MAT) or ability to obtain certification within 2 weeks of employment.
  • Adhere to all FCPA policies as well as those established by the Virginia Department of Social Services for childcare staff.
  • Provide recent negative TB test result.
  • Child Protective Services Registry check

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to life up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to traverse rough, uneven, muddy terrain for 2-5 miles.

  • An understanding of childhood development, including stages of growth, and how social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs intersect with learning. 
  • Child Development Credential or one-year early childhood certificate from a college or university.

Sully Historic Site

Title: Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Assistant
Location: Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151

Schedule: This is a part-time, year-round position.

Responsibilities: Sully Historic Site seeks part time buildings and grounds maintenance assistant. As an employee you will support the Maintenance Crew Chief with a variety of tasks. Building maintenance support includes sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping public and office areas and minor repair tasks. Grounds maintenance support includes safely mowing, string trimming, and clearing paths and trails. The maintenance assistant will also provide event support. Tasks may include setting up and taking down tents, tables chairs, fencing, signs, and trash cans. Event support may also include parking cars and trash pickup.

Certificates and Licenses Required: Driver's license (required). First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of appointment

Title: Store Clerk
Location: Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151
Salary: $13-$17 per hour
Status: G (Part-Time, maximum 900 hours per year)
Hours: 17.30 hours per week/52 weeks per year
Schedule: This is a part-time, year-round position required to work weekends and occasional weekdays (special events).

Responsibilities: Assist Visitor Services Manager with operational issues, which includes (but not limited to): housekeeping, administrative duties, pricing and merchandising. Overseeing the inventory of the store, purchasing, and receiving. Providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the employees also provide the same level of service. Responsibly managing store revenue, including accurate cash handling, drawer reconciliation, ticket management, and delivery of deposit. Attracting customers by creative merchandising. Ensuring interior and exterior of store is maintained to park standards. Planning events and promotion.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong leadership skills. Ability to effectively teach/develop others to the next level. Good merchandising skills and a flair for conceiving and implementing creative merchandising themes. Retail experience in receiving, stock and inventory as well as front-end management. Strong interpersonal, motivational, communication and organizational skills. An upbeat demeanor, with a sales-oriented personality. Experience with handling cash and various payment methods as well as working with customers in-person, over the phone or through email. The ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.

Certificates and Licenses Required: First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of appointment.

Necessary Special Requirements: All appointees must also agree to a criminal background check including fingerprinting and attend mandatory training.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. Must be able to climb 3 flights of stairs. Must be able to navigate uneven terrain on park property. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Title: Program Coordinator
Location: Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151
Hours:  20 to 30 hours/week; some weekend work required
Salary:  $15.00- $20.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

Overview: The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the implementation, and evaluation of on-site and outreach pro-grams. The position includes day-to-day office duties, scheduling educational programming, implementing tours, and working with staff on the creation of new and upcoming programming and exhibits. The incumbent will also lead programs including camps, school programs, tours and events. This position may also act as manager on duty, facilitate museum store sales, and perform front desk, administrative, and groundskeeping jobs included as needed. Drives county vehicles to countywide locations delivering supplies and supporting programs.

Duties Include: 

  • Implementation of Programming: Facilitates, coordinates, and implements programming for Pre-K to 12thgrade school groups, families, scouts, and camps. Secure all educational materials on time. Ensure the tidiness of the program spaces. Responsible for set-up, and clean-up of all programs. Assist in the coordina-tion of public programming, tours, and community outreach. Identify/produce educational program mate-rials to teach the programs. Secure staff and volunteer support as needed. Collects data to evaluate pro-grams.
  • Creation of Programming: Monitor the effectiveness of current programs to identify opportunities for change. Develop on-site and outreach educational programs (e.g. schools, scouts, and families) programs. Assist in logistic planning for new programming. Research as assigned to create programming.
  • Administrative: Provide customer service support to event participants by responding to telephone and email communications about events and programs. Manages reservations and collects deposits and fees. Keep quarterly inventories of educational supplies. Purchase educational materials to teach the programs. Assist in the scheduling of programs and communicate with leaders and participants. Coordinate logistics for public programs (may include booking speakers, processing invoices, stocking program materials). Work directly with the Visitor Services Manager to book educational programs with the Fairfax County Public Schools, regional school systems; and market education programs to school systems and individual schools, including producing marketing materials, meeting with potential customers, offering teacher in-services, etc. Assist in the creation of marketing materials, social media, or press releases for programming. Prepare materials for volunteer recruitment and training to support activities. Actively participates in staff training and department meetings.
  • Facility Operations: Serve as manager on duty, facilitate store sales, and perform front desk, administra-tive, and groundskeeping jobs included as needed. Opens and closes facilities. Inspects facilities and adja-cent areas and ensures that they are presentable, safe and acceptable for public use. Has thorough knowledge of Park Authority policies and procedures for handling emergency situations in the park. En-forces rules and regulations and professionally handles any infractions. Greets the public and provides technical information both in person and by telephone. Exercises initiative and good judgment when re-sponding to citizen's inquiries pertaining to natural, historical, and environmental issues. Process sales and class registrations at front desk. Participates in staff meetings. Supports the Visitor Center as needed includ-ing one weekend day a week.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies or a related field.
  • Experience presenting programs to individuals or groups or working with children and/or families.
  • Knowledge of diversity and inclusion best practices to communicate effectively with diverse ages, back-grounds, and all abilities.
  • Proficiency with common digital productivity programs (Microsoft Office), social media platforms, and digital communications platforms.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and be comfortable discussing difficult subjects, i.e. the institution of slavery, etc.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with the design and delivery of innovative, creative, high quality, and developmentally appro-priate programs for all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
  • Works well independently and in a team environment; adaptable and solution oriented.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with community partners, including other sites, muse-ums and organizations, K-12 schools and institutes of higher education, and government officials.
  • Excellent organizational skills: self-motivated with the ability to manage goals and productivity.
  • Strong communication skills and a significant ability to get along with many different types of people.
  • Energetic and personable; an innovative, creative thinker.
