Position: Manager on Duty (MOD)
Location: Burke Lake Park
Hours: Part time/30 hours per week average summer 20 hours per week Fall/Spring. Will include mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Expected to work weekends and holidays.
Salary: $12.66 to $18.47 per hour

Job Description: The Manager on Duty ensures the safe and effective operation of Burke Lake Park. Opens and closes the park for daily operations. Is responsible for training park staff and informing park patrons on Park Authority Rules and Regulations, state and county laws, and other important information as well as performing routine park checks. Responsible for cash handling activities and reconciliation. Supervises and serves as primary contact point for park visitors, patrons, and facility staff. Acts as lead first responder on behalf of the Park Authority in potential and actual emergency situations occurring on site while on duty.  Must be able to repeatedly lift 50 lbs. or more. May work other park facilities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications: Management experience. Ability to work alone in a park, work with others in a team setting, have effective communicative skills, and make decisions that may affect park operations. CPR, Boat U.S. and Basic Water Safety training recommended but will be provided upon employment.

Position: Park Naturalist/Outdoor Instructor 
Location: Burke Lake Park; 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039
Hours: Part-time. Approximately 19-30 hours per week.  
Schedule: Hours vary including some mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. 
Salary: $19.00 to $23.00  

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Park Programmer, the Park Naturalist performs various tasks including pre-senting interpretive programs with provided outlines in natural and cultural history, geocaching, orienteering, out-door recreation, kayaking, and natural science for age groups ranging from preschool to adults in various groups including school groups, scout groups, camps, public thematic class series, events, and off-site and special request programs. Assists operations staff and Camp Directors with park events and summer camps and provides overall operational support to all programs as needed. Additionally, this position will assist in assessing the site’s natural resources with the Lake Front Senior Interpreter. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Experience with natural sciences, education, recreation, or a closely related field.  
  • Experience presenting educational programs to groups and teaching children. 
  •  Ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Experience using a kayak or canoe or willingness to learn.  
  • Strong organizational skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified or the ability to attain certification within the first six months of employment.
