Urban Street Standards

Urban Street Standards in Fairfax County

Fairfax County Department of Transportation is developing local multimodal design guidelines for mixed-use activity centers. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation's (DRPT) Multimodal System Guidelines are tailored to the Commonwealth's needs and provide a statewide set of tools for multi-modal planning and design at the regional, community, and corridor levels to design and retrofit specific corridors that fit with the surrounding context.

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Road Design Manual Appendix B(2): Multimodal Design Standards for Mixed-Use Urban Centers serves to provide localities an optional mechanism within the Road Design Manual to implement the methodology of DRPT Multimodal System Design Guidelines and establish multimodal design standards for mixed-use urban centers.

This “Complete Street” approach to street elevates walking, bicycling, transit, and placemaking into the planning of transportation networks and ensures that streets and their associated transportation facilities are not only safe and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities but also support adjacent land uses and local economies.
