The Employees' Retirement System

The Fairfax County Supplemental Retirement System was established on July 1, 1955. On February 26, 2001, the name of the System was changed to the Fairfax County Employees’ Retirement System. In previous years, Fairfax County Employees’ Retirement System reported the plan as a cost sharing multiple employer defined benefit plan.

The System is considered as a single employer public employee retirement system providing defined benefit pension plan coverage to its members.

In 1974, certain public safety members of the system were moved to the then-new Uniformed Retirement System.

Membership Criteria

  • full-time and certain part-time general county Fairfax County employees,
  • employees who are not covered by the Fairfax County Police Officers Retirement System or the Fairfax County Uniformed Retirement System,
  • full-time and certain part-time employes of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) who are not covered by the Educational Employees’ Supplementary Retirement System of Fairfax County (ERFC) or the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).

Number of Members

There were 13,783 active members, 742 in the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP), 2,735 terminated vested members, and 11,065 retirees participating in the System as of June 30, 2023.
