This program provides for the installation of streetlights on public roadways through a citizen petition process.

Program Summary

In the past, Fairfax County received and processed petitions for new streetlight additions. At present, there is no dedicated funding in the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) budget to add streetlights. Communities may choose to make a non-reimbursable contribution to fund the installation of new streetlights, and the County would pay for the monthly operation and maintenance costs for those new streetlights.

Additionally, there may be discretionary funds available from the magisterial district Supervisor to assist communities in funding new streetlights which petitioners would need to arrange with their respective district office. Potential funding from a magisterial district Supervisor is under the district’s office discretion and funding availability.

All petitions for new streetlight installations need to meet eligibility requirements

As part of the petition process, a Standard Petition Form signed by a simple majority of the residents whose property abuts the section of road requesting streetlights must also be submitted to the County.

The installation of all streetlights is governed by the Board of Supervisors adopted policy, terms, and conditions of the appropriate contract with the utility company. Fairfax County shall determine the location of all requested streetlights required to properly illuminate the petitioned area to ensure new streetlights adhere with County adopted illumination engineering standards and criteria.
