County Conversation Podcast with Reston Community Center Executive Director

Leila Gordon, executive director of the Reston Community Center, appeared on the Jan. 11 episode of the “County Conversation” podcast. She provided an overview of the Reston Community Center as well as the 38th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration, Jan. 14-17.

The Reston Community Center is a Fairfax County government agency, but it's funded by a special tax district not by general fund revenues.

“That special tax district was created solely for the purpose of constructing and managing and operating programs for the leisure time experiences of the people living and working in Reston, primarily the geography of the Reston ZIP codes,” noted Gordon.

Reston Community Center Quote from Leila Gordon

“Restonians did that through a democratic process that is required to create a small tax district, and they affirm that on a regular basis through community engagement with our agency. We then deliver programming in arts and culture, leisure and learning, aquatics, off-site and collaboration, and facility rentals for the community,” added Gordon.

The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration is an example of that local programming, while also serving as a testament to the values and dreams of King. The event is also a reminder of the values of Robert E. Simon Jr., the founder of Reston, who sought to create a place where everyone was welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic status and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
