Three mural designs for Hybla Valley Community Center
July 8, 2024
Franconia Supervisor Rodney Lusk and the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services invite community input on a mural design for the exterior wall on the east side of Hybla Valley Community Center. The designs were submitted as the result of an April 2024 call for artists. The selected artist will paint the mural in August.  Voting is available July 8-26 (by 5 p.m.). The design finalists are pictured in the graphic at right. Voting is available online or in person at Hybla Valley Community Center, 7950 Audubon Ave., Alexandria, VA. Fairfax County purchased the facility, originally the Mount Vernon Athletic Club, in May 2020, and the center officially opened in May 2022. The county made several improvements to the facility in the areas of basic accessibility, capital renewal, safety and community use updates. In addition to providing resources for the community, the community center is also the site of the Workforce Innovation Skills Hub (W.I.S.H.), a workforce training and development center. To learn more about the project, visit the community center's webpage.
Happy Fastran driver and passenger in winter
July 1, 2024
Effective July 1, 2024, Fastran transportation service – which is currently managed by Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) – will be managed by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT). The realignment will streamline responsibilities and eliminate redundancies, allowing for improved service delivery and enhanced collaboration. Program users will not experience changes in service delivery or scheduling. Participants will work with the same core team, and the phone number for the Customer Care Line will remain the same (703-222-9764, TTY 711). Fastran is a specialized door-to-door transportation service for residents of Fairfax County and the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax participating in human services agency programs, including: Critical Medical Care Adult Day Health Care Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board programs Senior Centers Trips of Necessity from 18 senior residence developments Therapeutic Recreation Services Fastran also participates in community programs such as: Stuff the Bus Charter Trips "The Fairfax County Department of Transportation has provided high-quality transportation services to our community since 1985,” said Dwayne Pelfrey, FCDOT’s Transit Services Division Chief. “Adding Fastran to our services aligns all essential County transportation resources, allowing us to better meet the changing needs of our community." Though Fastran operations will move to FCDOT, NCS will continue to operate other human services mobility management programs that increase awareness of and access to transportation services. These include mobility management, travel training and the Transportation Options, Programs and Services (TOPS) program. These programs create a critical bridge between transportation services and individuals accessing the Fairfax County Human Services system, including individuals with disabilities, older adults and individuals with limited income. “This realignment allows each organization to focus on its mission and expertise, while strengthening our shared commitment to expanded transportation access” said NCS Director Lloyd Tucker. “Our colleagues at FCDOT are positioned to improve service delivery while NCS focuses on creating opportunities to access services in our community.” (Click photo for high-resolution version)
