Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Clinical Services Offers:

  • Individual and family therapy—both teletherapy and in person
  • Domestic abuse survivor group. This is a free eight-week group combining elements from psychoeducation, support, and process groups for adult female-identifying survivors of domestic violence. Themes and topics explored during group are the dynamics of domestic violence, safety, self-care, coping skills, healthy relationships, assertiveness and boundary setting, shame and guilt, and grief and loss. Groups are currently held virtually in English and vary by day and time. Email with interest in this group.
  • Women’s sexual violence survivor group. This is a free 10-week group for adult female and female-identifying survivors of sexual trauma. During the group survivors will connect with and learn from each other’s experiences while focusing on themes of understanding and coping with sexual trauma, building healthy relationships after sexual trauma, and rebuilding self-esteem and connection to self after sexual trauma.   • Dialectical Therapy Behavioral Group. This is a free confidential group for adults who have experienced domestic/sexual violence. The group is led by a licensed therapist specializing in working with trauma survivors and differs from other groups offered by DSVS is on skill building rather than sharing personal experiences. Participants will learn how to: 
    • Utilize mindfulness to aid trauma recovery
    • Increase interpersonal effectiveness
    • Identify, understand, and manage emotions
    • Cope with difficult emotions and situations

This group is currently offered in English to adults who identify as women. To enroll email

  • Story Cloths group for survivors of trauma. This 12-week group therapy is open to all women and is led in English and Spanish (though all languages are welcome). For information on joining the group, email.  
  • State-certified domestic violence intervention program for those who cause harm (ADAPT). This is an 18-week group therapy that focuses on emotional regulation, compassion, trauma recovery, and conflict resolution skills. Clients must meet the five requirements for accountability to complete ADAPT. Group sessions are two hours long.
    1. Acknowledging responsibility for one’s actions
    2. Acknowledging the impact of one’s actions on self and others
    3. Expressing remorse
    4. Taking actions to repair harm through demonstration of compassion toward self and others
    5. No longer committing similar harm to self and others
  • Quality Assurance Services. This team is responsible for monitoring the efficacy and effectiveness of department policies, intake coordination, documentation, maintaining records requests, Freedom of Information Act requests, subpoena requests, and monitoring data and gaps of services provided to the community through ADAPT and Counseling Services.

Who Is Eligible?

Counseling Services provides free services to victim/survivors of family members who have experienced domestic or sexual violence, human trafficking, or stalking. You must live in, work in, or have been abused or assaulted in Fairfax County of the cities of Fairfax or Falls Church. Children are eligible for individual counseling services.

ADAPT is a certified domestic violence intervention program that teaches emotional regulations skills to adult residents of Fairfax County and the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax who have been physically, emotionally, or sexually abusive to a spouse, partner, child, parent, or other family member. There is a fee for this program. Those outside of Fairfax County but within Virginia can be considered for an increased fee.
