Today’s smart televisions are a far cry from the days of monophonic televisions with “rabbit ears” antennas. With flat screens, digital pictures and sound, and wireless connections to the Internet that enable interactive viewing, TVs now provide viewers with an entertainment experience that in some ways surpasses that of the local movie theater. Moreover, old VCR and even DVD technologies that stored movies and other content on a physical medium have been replaced in many homes by devices and services that offer virtually unlimited access to video content stored in the “cloud” and available on demand via “streaming” over the Internet, which doesn’t require the content to first be downloaded. Streaming technology has become a game changer for those consumers that don’t like the idea of paying for so-called “linear TV” offered by cable and satellite TV providers. That said, there are still many who prefer the ease and simplicity of traditional linear TV. Amid all these changes, one thing is clear – TVs and video technologies will continue to change in response to our viewing needs and desires.
