Accessibility in Fairfax County - Routes and Entrances

wheelchair ramp signUnder the ADA, buildings that offer services to the general public are required to have an accessible route from the accessible parking spaces through the entrance of the building.

An accessible entrance includes ramps or a level entrance, low thresholds, appropriate door handles and ease of effort required opening the door. Entrances to public facilities must be accessible and the threshold must be 1/2 inch high maximum, unless the existing or altered threshold 3/4 high maximum has a beveled edge on each side. Doors should be at least 32 inches in width and if automatic (such as motion sensitive) there must be sufficient time between opening and closing for a person to pass through safely. Lever door handles are best to assist persons with limited hand mobility or dexterity. (ADA Title III Regulation 28 CFR Part 36).

An accessible route is a path which connects accessible spaces. It includes paths from accessible parking to the building entrance, restrooms, drinking fountains, corridors, hallways, ramps, elevators, etc. The minimum clear width of an accessible route is 36 inches. It must be barrier free and include curb cuts when leading from an accessible parking space. (2006 International Building Code and ICC/ANSI A 117.1-2003).
