The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) supports quality early childhood education programs for children at risk for school failure. Families with income at, or below 200% of poverty, with children who are three and four years old by Sept. 30 of the school year and who live in Fairfax County or the city of Fairfax are eligible for participation in VPI.

Children are also eligible if they meet one or more of the following criteria: 

• Identified with special needs and have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
• Have parents or guardians who did not complete high school. 
• Experience homelessness.
• Are under a Child Protective Service order.
• Live in a foster care home.
• Live in families who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
• Live with a teen parent.
• Have a parent who is incarcerated.

VPI supports children's school readiness through:

• Quality early childhood education programs.
• Health, mental health, dental and developmental screenings and follow-up as needed.
• Experiences that result in smooth transitions to kindergarten.

Programs partner with families to provide:

• Workshops and events that engage families in their children's early education experiences.
• Literacy programs.
• Resource materials.

Early childhood professionals participating in VPI receive support through:

• Ongoing professional development.
• On-site visits and technical assistance.
• Classroom supplies that support engaging learning environments, quality adult-child interactions, and curriculum implementation.
