The Jones Branch Connector, a joint effort by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Fairfax County to build a new crossing over the Capital Beltway in Tysons, has been named the 2021 National Project of the Year by the American Society of Highway Engineers.
The annual awards recognize outstanding work completed on transportation projects, including highways, bridges, traffic signals, railroads, public transit and bikeways. Projects are judged on criteria of complexity, innovation, social and economic considerations, safety and aesthetics, and sustainable features.

Fairfax County, again this year, will close one northbound lane of Tysons Boulevard for community recreation as the region continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The closure is scheduled to begin Wed., July 14, 2021 and will give pedestrians and bicyclists access to a .5 mile stretch of road from Westbranch Drive to the pedestrian entrance of Lillian Court at Tysons II (right before International Dr. around the Tysons Galleria area) connecting with bike lanes on both Park Run Drive and Westpark Drive.

Beginning today, a short segment of one eastbound lane of Government Center Parkway will be temporarily closed for dedicated pedestrian and bicyclist use. This temporary closure provides Fairfax County residents another improved and safer option for outdoor recreation while maintaining social distancing practices during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The duration of the closure will depend on the rate of continued reopening following the reductions of COVID-19 related restrictions.

Fairfax Connector will resume service to the bus loop at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride as construction has been completed. Customers may board buses in the bus loop beginning on Monday, July 13, 2020.
Other construction activity continues at the Park and Ride to prepare for Silver Line Phase 2 Metrorail service, including the Kiss and Ride lot, which will be closed until Silver Line Phase 2 Metrorail service begins next year.

Beginning this Memorial Day, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) will be closing three Metrorail Orange Line stations for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. To expedite construction and minimize customer inconvenience, Vienna, Dunn Loring and East Falls Church Metrorail stations will be closed from Saturday, May 23, 2020, through Monday, Sept. 7, 2020, to allow for around-the-clock work. The station closures are part of WMATA's three-year Platform Improvement Project that will completely reconstruct the outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations, making them safer and more accessible for customers with disabilities, while also addressing safety concerns and longstanding structural issues.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and Fairfax County celebrated a joint effort today to construct a crucial new link for drivers, transit users, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Scotts Crossing Road, a half-mile of new roadway and bridges over the Capital Beltway from Jones Branch Drive to Route 123, is now fully open, including two travel lanes, a bicycle lane and lighted sidewalk in each direction, to improve access to destinations such as the I-495 Express Lanes and McLean Metro Station. A wide, raised median is also reserved to accommodate future transit.

Beginning September 23 through December 2019, Fairfax Connector bus service at the Herndon-Monroe Park and Ride will be relocated to a temporary stop on Sunrise Valley Drive. The relocation of service is due to necessary construction on the bus loop.
Improvements are needed to prepare for bus and rail service, as this location will convert to the Herndon-Metrorail Station when Phase 2 of the Silver Line is completed in 2020. Fairfax County thanks our customers for their patience during construction.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, 2018, Fairfax County launches a pilot project that adds black e-bikes to the bright red-colored Capital Bikeshare fleet in Reston and Tysons. The pilot is scheduled to run through November 2018. The e-bikes, known as Capital Bikeshare Plus, are battery operated pedal-assist bicycles that provide users with a small boost, making pedaling uphill or longer distances effortless. There will be approximately 80 e-bikes deployed across the National Capital Region as part of the pilot.
