Parks, open space, and places for recreation are critical to serving the current and future population and employment base of Tysons. A comprehensive urban park system supports a high quality of life and provides social, economic and health benefits. Below are the major Comprehensive Plan elements of the Tysons urban park system:

• Conceptual Parks and Open Space Network envisions an integrated network of existing and planned gathering places, parks of various types, trails, and environmentally sensitive areas. For more details and the recommended types of parks and open space, see the above-linked Tysons Plan on pages 88-89.
• Urban Park Types are included in the Urban Parks Framework (Appendix 2, page 15) in the Parks and Recreation Policy Plan. Five distinct types of urban parks are intended to accommodate a broad spectrum of recreational and leisure needs.
• Urban Park Standards (Tysons Plan, page 92) for the provision of park and open space land are 1.5 acres per 1,000 residents and 1 acre per 10,000 employees. Parkland intended to meet the goals for Tysons can be publicly owned, privately owned and publicly accessible, or provided through public-private partnerships.
• To meet active recreational needs, new developments in Tysons should apply Park Facility Service Level Standards found in the Urban Park Framework. For further guidance on service needs, design, and creative approaches for athletic fields, see the Tysons Plan (pages 92-93).
