Inclement weather, emergencies or changes in the Court's operation
The court rarely closes unless the weather is extremely hazardous or if emergencies arise that impact normal court operation. When that occurs, local radio and television stations will be notified and requested to announce the closing. Important announcements are also posted on the County of Fairfax Web Page.
You may contact 703-246-SNOW (7669) for detailed closing information.
We follow the closings for the Fairfax County Courthouse, Fairfax County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court, or Fairfax County Government, not the Public Schools.

What you need to know about your court appearances
If you receive a summons or notice to appear in Fairfax JDRDC, the scheduled time of your appearance is on your summons. If you are late, the Judge could issue a Rule or a warrant for failing to appear. Allow extra travel time when coming to the Courthouse. Traffic in Northern Virginia is often heavy and public transportation buses do not run frequently. You also need time to park and walk to the Courthouse. Although scheduled for a specific time, you may be at the Courthouse for several hours. Sometimes cases go to trial and other cases get delayed. Be prepared with something to occupy your time. Dress appropriately, as if you were going to a job interview. Dressing neatly shows respect for the Court..
If you are coming to court for a criminal charge, you need to attend the Advisement Hearing so that, if necessary, an attorney may be appointed for your scheduled court date. If you are coming to court for a civil case, it is your responsibility to hire an attorney prior to your court appearance. Attorneys should be hired in advance so there is time to prepare your case. Call the Fairfax Lawyer Referral Service at 703-246-3780 with questions about hiring an attorney.
If unable to appear for your hearing, you need to file a Motion for a Continuance. That can be done at the JDRDC Pre-Court Window on the 3rd floor of the Fairfax Courthouse. The clerk will explain the process and assist with the appropriate forms. Only a judge can grant a continuance. If you have an emergency the day of court, call 703-246-3367, immediately and let the court know. If you have been subpoenaed to court as a witness, you must appear. If the victim is a family member, they must appear in court also. A case cannot go forward unless the victims are here.
If you need an interpreter, call 703-246-3367 for more information. The court has Spanish interpreters at all time; interpreters for other languages must be arranged in advance. If you need special accommodations because of physical challenges, you can call 703-246-3367 or 711 (TTY) to make arrangements. If you have children, try to get a babysitter and leave them at home. If you must bring them to court, bring diapers, bottles, food, and toys with which they can play quietly. There is very little space for children to run around in, and you may be here for several hours.
