Consider a job within the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division.  The Stormwater Management Division is responsible for the county’s stormwater and designated transportation infrastructure and provides support for emergency response during flooding and snowstorms.  We are looking for individuals to fill our temporary/seasonal Maintenance Worker positions.  Training and guidance are provided by knowledgeable experienced staff.

Under the general supervision of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor or team lead, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of semi-skilled duties required in the operations of stormwater management. Performs concrete, asphalt and basic storm sewer construction and maintenance work. Operates a variety of small engine equipment and engages in manual labor. Maintains compliance with the approved performance standards for this position. During winter weather or designated emergencies, engages in manual labor removing snow and ice from walkways and designated areas. Maintains a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Employment Standards: Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

Preferred Qualifications: Two years stormwater and snow removal experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required: A valid Virginia driver’s license. This position requires a valid motor vehicle license and is subject to a driving record check as a condition of employment and periodically thereafter, as determined by Risk Management.

Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record, and a Pre-employment Medical Evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer. 

Physical Requirements: Ability to push pull, lift, bend stoop, walk, climb in and out of catch basins and manholes with assistance, and includes removal.  This position requires the physical and mental capability of performing confined space entry operations via 21” manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation, hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness, replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 lbs.

Location: 6901 Allen Park Road in Lorton, Virginia. 

Safely operates commercial vehicles and medium motorized equipment for refuse collection. Complies with all applicable Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations. Report for duty promptly in proper uniform and physical condition. Follow instructions from supervisory personnel and communicate any problems to a supervisor. Complete daily vehicle pre/post trip inspections. Assure cleanliness of vehicles.  Prepare and complete all required logs and reports including reports on traffic incidents. Utilize the communication systems (cell phones, radios, etc.) in accordance with County policies and regulations of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). Lead assigned crew members. Maintain good customer/employee/supervisor relations. Provide information to customers in a helpful, courteous, efficient manner. Ensures a safe work environment for county staff and complex customers. Engages in safe working practices and complies County safety programs and guidelines. Maintains the standards of the County, including but not limited to the Drug & Alcohol, safety, and personnel policies and procedures.
Assignment could include collection of trash, recycling, yard waste and/or leaves.  Equipment could be rear loader, side loader, two man refuse truck or leaf truck. Multiple positions will be available.

Work is scheduled to begin immediately.

Non-Merit Benefit Eligible: scheduled to work a minimum 1,040 hours and no more than a maximum of 1,560 hours per calendar year. Individuals in non-exempt benefits-eligible positions are eligible for limited employee benefits, including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage, and participation in flexible spending programs, but are not eligible to earn leave or receive holiday pay.

Non-Merit Temporary: Scheduled to work no more than a maximum of 900 hours per calendar year.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.

Licenses and Certifications Required: A valid commercial driver’s license CDL B or higher. Must be able to obtain a DOT medical card.

Necessary Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, alcohol/drug test, driving record check, and commercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

Required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

Physical Requirements: Ability to walk, run, and bend the knees frequently; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to handle strenuous activities and repetitive motions; ability to perform duties in any type of weather conditions; may be exposed to Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). Subject to working in adverse weather conditions.

Under supervision of a kitchen manager maintains responsibility for preparation, cooking and serving of all meals at Crossroads residential treatment program. Prepares food for snacks, and all other food related activities i.e. meetings, parties, and picnics. Operates all hand and heavy kitchen equipment, cleans/maintains the kitchen in a sanitary manner, maintains inventory, receives, and puts away orders, which includes lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. pushing/pulling loaded food carts and dollies. Supervises clients while they prepare, serve, and clean up after meals. Serves as emergency service personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or GED issued by a state department of education; plus one year of experience in a small to medium size kitchen operation, specifically in food preparation.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a large kitchen operation, specifically food preparation; Completion of Food Handler Certificate.

Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record, a Child Protective Services Registry, a TB screen, and a Sanctions Screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

Multiple positions available.

Under the general supervision of the senior maintenance supervisor, the senior maintenance worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties required in the operation and preventive maintenance of a mechanical truck mounted rodder or combination vac truck (the latter of which is heavy equipment), and other equipment to include trailer mounted pumps, camera pole, crash cushion trailer. Performs visual inspections of sanitary sewer lines and manholes in accessible areas where rodding and flushing may be required. Identifies defects and cleaning requirements. Assists in the cleaning of manholes. After the cleaning task has been completed, will assist in moving the equipment to a new location. Work tasks will consist of the initial set up of the rodder, extend-a- jet, or flusher to do routine sanitary sewer maintenance as required. As a member of the various crews, will assist in setting up traffic cones, safety lights, and all equipment pertaining to confined space entry. Serves as a flagger and directs traffic flow as needed to ensure all safety procedures are carried out. Walks stream valleys investigating sanitary sewer creek crossings, prioritizing the crossings in terms of need for protection and/or rehabilitation, and to consider them as possible candidates for a joint Stormwater/Wastewater project.    May serve as lead position in field over maintenance workers performing inspection and/or maintenance functions in the performance of their duties as required.  Uses laptops and an asset management (software) system with county GIS to create, edit and complete work orders. Must be able to walk on uneven ground such as hills, wooded, and marshy areas.

Minimum Employment Standards:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with wastewater collection system and repair including manhole repair, excavation, backfill, and asphalt paving. Experience working with combination unit sewer cleaners and rodders. Good communication skills. Experience using desktop or laptop computers regularly.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  A valid commercial driver’s license CDL (Class A or B) and tank truck endorsement, or a valid CDL Lerner’s Permit.  Appointees with only a CDL Learner’s Permit,  must obtain a valid CDL within 6 months of hire date or be terminated from the position.

Other certifications required include VDOT flagging card, DOT medical card and appointees must satisfactorily complete mandatory training for OSHA confined space entry within the first 6 months of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Appointees to these positions will be required to complete a criminal background check and medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment. Flagging certification is required.  The appointee must also provide a satisfactory official certified driving transcript from the state of his residence.

Pre-employment, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing is mandatory for this position. The appointee must also show compliance with DOT drug/alcohol testing requirement requirements as demonstrated by reports from prior employers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee may be required to enter permitted confined spaces, using an OSHA, certified non-entry retrieval system, which includes a safety harness with a weight restriction of 310 pounds.
