What We Do

There is a General District Court in each city and county in Virginia. The Fairfax County General District Court is the court that hears traffic violation cases, minor criminal cases known as misdemeanors, and civil cases such as landlord and tenant disputes, contract disputes, and personal injury actions. The General District Court does not conduct jury trials. All cases in this court are heard by a judge. Jury trials are held only in Circuit Court, as provided by the Constitution of Virginia. The Court Services Division (CSD) primarily provides pretrial evaluation services of incarcerated defendants so that judges and magistrates can make informed release decisions, provides pretrial community supervision to defendants awaiting trial, and supplies probation services to convicted misdemeanants and convicted non-violent felons (Class 5 and 6).

Overview

Most cases are heard in the Fairfax County Courthouse.  Misdemeanors and traffic violations under local laws of the Town of Vienna, Town of Herndon, or City of Fairfax are heard in a courthouse inside of those jurisdictions.  Please see the Contacts page for more information about those courthouses.
