Fairfax Green Initiatives are energy-related initiatives that Fairfax County believes are crucial to begin to stem the growth of greenhouse gases which are dramatically altering our environment, our world and the people, places and property in our communities.
On February 5, 2019, the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted the Fairfax Green Initiatives Board Matter, introduced by Supervisors Storck, Foust and (now Chairman) McKay to expedite consideration and implementation of 19 energy-related action items.
On July 28, 2020, the Board unanimously adopted a follow-on motion, Fairfax Green Initiatives #2, introduced by Supervisor Storck, with 14 additional environment and energy-related action items.
Between 2019 and 2022, staff in the Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination tracked and reported on Fairfax Green Initiatives through an implementation matrix. During this time, 26 of the 33 action items were completed and efforts to address the remaining seven action items were initiated.
When the Community-wide Energy and Climate Action Plan (CECAP) Implementation Plan was presented to the Board’s Environmental Committee in December 2022, it included actions matching the seven ongoing Fairfax Green Initiatives action items. To avoid duplicative reporting, these ongoing Fairfax Green Initiatives action items will be tracked through future CECAP implementation updates.
The final Fairfax Green Initiatives Implementation Matrix provides a summary of activity to date on all action items and identifies the CECAP Implementation Actions that correspond to the seven ongoing Fairfax Green Initiatives action items.
