Springfield District Rep for Park Board Named

The Park Authority Board has a new member representing the Springfield District, Harold Y. Pyon, appointed by Springfield District Supervisor Elaine McConnell in November 2007 as the successor to long-time representative Kenneth Feng. Pyon previously served on the Park Authority Board from 1992 to 1997.

Mr. Pyon currently has a detail assignment at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Technology Administration as a senior advisor. He serves as a supervisory patent examiner in the U.S. Department of Commerce, Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA.

Prior to joining the patent office, he worked as a technical services manager at E.R. Squibb and Sons, Inc. He served in the U.S. Army between 1973 and 1976 as a medic and medical laboratory specialist in the 15th combat support hospital in Ft. Belvoir, VA.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980 and a Master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia in 1983. He also attended the Juris Masters Certificate program in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1996. He earned a Certificate of Advanced Public Management at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University in 2001.

Mr. Pyon also has a long history of public service. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Fairfax County Economic Recovery Commission, the Annandale Chamber of Commerce, the American Heart Association, and the Park Authority Board. He was appointed by the Governor of Virginia in 1981 to serve on the Board of Visitors at Virginia Commonwealth University. On June 1, 2007 he was appointed to the State Board of Elections and serves as the vice chair.

Mr. Pyon’s appointment expires in December 2010.

The Fairfax County Park Authority Board is appointed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. These 12 appointees are comprised of one representative from each of the nine magisterial districts, plus three at-large members. The board sets policy and establishes priorities for the park agency.
