What is Early Literacy?
Early literacy is what children know about communication, language—verbal and non-verbal—reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Research shows that children get ready to read years before they start school. Help children learn important skills now so they can become good readers later.
Parents and caregivers play an important role in getting young children ready to read. Why?
- You are children’s first role model, and they look up to you.
- You know these children best.
- You can help children learn reading skills in ways that are easiest for them.
- Children learn best by doing things, and they love doing things with you.
Take every opportunity to read, play, sing, talk and write with your children. These simple practices will help get children ready to learn.
